Does a detached ADU need an outdoor emergency disconnect?

In most cases, yes. The 2023 NEC, which the 2025 California Electrical Code adopts, requires an emergency disconnect in a readily accessible outdoor location on or within sight of a one- or two-family dwelling, whether that dwelling has its own utility service (Section 230.85) or is supplied by a feeder from another building (Section 225.41). A detached ADU is a dwelling unit, so expect plan check to look for one.

Why the rule exists

The goal is to let firefighters and other first responders cut power to a home from outside without going in. That matters for a backyard ADU, where the panel may be inside a unit someone else is renting, or behind a locked gate.

If your ADU is fed from the main house

Section 225.41 applies to one- and two-family dwelling units supplied by a feeder. The key requirements are:

  • Location: outdoors, readily accessible, and on or within sight of the ADU.
  • Rating: a short-circuit current rating equal to or greater than the available fault current.
  • Grouping: if there is more than one emergency disconnect, they must be grouped.
  • Marking: labeled "EMERGENCY DISCONNECT" on the outside front of the enclosure, in white letters on a red background, and durable enough for the location.
  • Other energy sources: if solar, battery or generator disconnects are not right next to it, a plaque or directory at the emergency disconnect must show where they are.

Separately, Article 225 requires a disconnect for any building supplied by a feeder, at a readily accessible location nearest where the conductors enter. When that building disconnect is itself outdoors and meets the emergency disconnect location rules, it can often serve both purposes. Confirm the exact arrangement with your plan reviewer.

If your ADU has its own service and meter

Section 230.85 applies. The emergency disconnect can be the service disconnect, a meter disconnect built into the meter equipment, or another listed disconnect marked suitable for service equipment on the supply side of the service disconnect. Each type carries specific marking text, such as "EMERGENCY DISCONNECT, SERVICE DISCONNECT." One way to meet the rule is an outdoor meter-main panel whose main breaker is the service disconnect.

Attached ADUs and garage conversions

An attached ADU or a garage conversion usually shares the main house service. The existing service isn't automatically required to change, but if your project replaces the service equipment, Section 230.85 applies its emergency disconnect requirements to the new equipment.

What this means for your electrical plan

Your site plan and single-line diagram should show where the emergency disconnect sits, its rating, its label and any directory for solar or battery disconnects. If you are still choosing between a subpanel and a separate service, read how a detached ADU subpanel works and when a separate service is required. Our electrical plans show the disconnect arrangement, and the ADU electrical guide covers the rest of the feeder design.
